Yuck! Day 3 of Conditioner Only!

I admit, I've been keeping a secret from Lady Beautiful readers. Today was my third day not shampooing my hair! That's right! For the past three days I've been using conditioner only, AKA, "CO". The friend who introduced me to CO was my friend, Mrs. U. Mrs. U told me about a web forum for long hair, The Long Hair Community.

Before consulting this site, I took it upon my self to test CO. The first day wasn't so bad, the second day, yesterday, my hair looked nice and silky, then today......today my hair looked more oily as the day wore on. A girl at church even admitted, "Yeah, it looks like it hasn't been washed." Hey, she was being honest! So....I was about to give up until Mrs. U gave me the link the the Long Hair Community. They have such great advice. Here's what I learned from some of the members:

-Find a cheap conditioner like Suave, VO5, white rain, or something similar.

-
Wet the hair down in the shower and apply *generous* amounts of conditioner to the scalp and length. You should have enough that your hair actually feels slimy with it and every strand is covered. Then you can use the pads of your fingers to massage your scalp. Do other showering before rinsing. Rinse in the coolest water you can stand. Rinse for at least 2 minutes.

-If it's still greasy after washing with conditioner, you might want to use *more* conditioner on your scalp, and leave it on longer, and then rinse for an extra minute. OR if it's that your hair doesn't stay clean long enough, it may be that your scalp hasn't adjusted yet. A lot of times people who CO have to "transition" for a few weeks as their scalps adjust to the lack of shampoo.

-CO is much gentler but your scalp has to "learn" not to keep producing so much oil. It'll happen!

THANKS LADIES!

We'll see what happens the rest of the week....in the mean time, If it works...TRY IT!

I'm curious to hear how it goes. Is it specifically better for long hair? My hair is a little longer than shoulder length right now. It was much longer, but then I decided to grow out my bangs a year ago. When I went to get my hair evened out a little bit, the stylist encouraged me to go a little shorter so that I could give it to Locks of Love, which I was excited to do. Now I am working on growing out *all* my hair (including the bangs) again.

By the way, maybe sometime you could give suggestions for how to grow out bangs gracefully. It's always an awkward stage of life! :)

Lean Not,

I agree! Growing out bangs is really tough, I'm currently doing that too!

Thanks for the advice, I'll probably post about that soon, please help me out there too!

Melissa,

I have very long hair and I only wash it 2 or 3 times a week. It's definitely better for the hair! I also let it get dry on its own. It works wonders!

Yesterday, day 4, my hair looked perfectly clean! It seems as though conditioner does work to clean your heart, you just have to leave it longer than you would shampoo.

Most conditioners have a great scent matching the shampoo. Since the inexpensive conditioner is recommended, I would suggest experimenting with your favorite Suave scent, as they have MANY to choose from (coconut being a favorite of mine, which is weird because I don't like the fruit).

Thanks for the questions! I'm working on day 5!

Hi there. I have very long hair...currently to my knees and wonder how this would work for me.

About a year ago I got a perm. BAD idea and never will I ever put myself or my hair through that again! Not that it messed up my hair..it didn't. I just can't comb THROUGH it anymore!

I finally found this stuff in a tub that is shea butter leave-in conditioner and it's helped me greatly.

I will continue to check on you to see if this works as well as you've heard. If it does I'd be very willing to try it on mine.

Thanks for being the guinea pig. LOL j/k

haha, Jenibeans,

you're so funny! Of course I love being the guinea pig! Here I am, at the end of day five, I'm pretty sure my hair still looks good. I'm very pleased with the results.

I think that on Saturday, if all is still going well, I will pronounce "CO" a winner in my book!

Hi!

I just found your blog via Mrs. U (she's such a dear!). I am so glad you posted about this because it's something my Curly Girl book encourages but I have been afraid to try it. I have an oily scalp and if I even skip a day of washing my head feels itchy. I think I might try the conditioner only and see how it goes.

I hope you'll keep us updated as more time passes. (o:

Question: How often did you wash your hair before you began CO?

And after beginning CO, do you have to wash it everyday? (I have long, thick hair that takes forever to blowdry and looks terrible if I don't! I do not want to have to go through drying it every day.)

New Mom: I washed my hair everyday, if not 6 days a week, like if I woke up late :D

I have been COing my hair every day....and blow drying the top half, only the top as the rest goes in a bun (I work at a bakery).

I would love to know how to not have to blow dry my hair. If I have even a morsel (lack of better words) of dampness in my hair, it frizzes!

That sounds like a great future post!

Thanks :D

Hi Melissa!!!
I realized just today that I have been washing my hair with conditioner only (CO) almost an entire year now!!! I still enjoy it and my hair still feels MUCH less oily than it used to!! :)

I have been using an extremely cheap conditioner method for the past four months and I have had nothing but success.

There was a three week period when my scalp was itchier than when I had lice back in the fifth grade, but the last month or so has been completely itch free.

I also use to have extremely bad dandruff, and now I just have an occasion flake or two, it's really nice.

The only complaint I would have to say is going to get my hair cut and having to explain to my hair dresser. Or bringing it up in conversation and people being completely disgusted with the idea, trying to convert you back to the 'poo.

hi Melissa,

I just wanted to add that sometimes a every now and then clarifying shampoo is needed with CO. My hair is waist and I CO, but I clarify as needed. Suave Naturals Coconut conditioner works well for me and Suave Daily Clarifying. Your hair is beautiful BTW. :)

Isn't it less expensive to use shampoo in cleansing the hair than using so much conditioner and doing it twice?

Treatment for Hair Loss said...

Really?! You were able to do that. Not using shampoo for 3 days. I can't imagine what could be the scent of your hair.

I was first thinking of doing water only but I think my hair is too oily now to do that. So I decided to try CO washing. I'm going to do my first CO wash after I post. The top of my hair is great, then the ends are dry, so I decided to try CO washing. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks for the post!

I heard that all Wen is, is just a conditioner -- nothing special. Two nights ago I washed my hair with Suave conditioner. I wet my hair and then applied a very generous amount of conditioner to it. I massaged it into my hair and scalp just like I do when I shampoo. Then I rinsed it out of my hair completely and blew it dry. I was really surprised. It is soft and shiny and not a bit oily or gunky. It's like I used the finest shampoo made (whatever that is). I don't know if I'll stick with CO, but I'm happy to know that washing my hair with conditioner only is an extremely good alternative. Btw, my hair is on the short side and it's highlighted. I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work just as well with long hair.

Heya! I just wanted to ask if you ever have any problems with hackers?

My last blog (wordpress) was hacked and I ended up losing several weeks
of hard work due to no data backup. Do you have any
methods to protect against hackers?
